We’re excited to celebrate National Truck Driver Appreciation Week during the second week of September. We want to thank the 3.5 million American truck drivers that work tirelessly. Our country has depended on the efforts of truck drivers who deliver essential cargo and as a result, help advance our economy. To keep drivers safe and prepared for long hauls, we have compiled some long-distance towing tips. Learn more by reading below.
Always Stay in the Slow Lane When Towing Long Distance
When long-distance towing, we recommend staying in the slow lane for multiple reasons. First, constantly changing lanes can be difficult and by staying in a singular large, you can maneuver easily out of traffic when needed, which includes having easy access to rest stops and weigh stations. By staying in one lane, you can also avoid potential collisions caused by lanes changes.
Familiarize Yourself with Weight Limits
To stay safe on the road, you should ensure that your trailer and what you’re hauling are all within the capacities of your vehicle. If you’re unsure of the weight limit of your truck or trailer, check the owner’s manual to see what kind of trailers you can haul and the maximum weight it can pull. Additionally, if you are hauling a trailer, make sure that you are using the correct trailer hitch and that it is hitched correctly.
Distribute Your Trailer’s Weight Evenly
If your weight isn’t evenly distributed in your trailer, it can fishtail or move from side to side. If you find that your trailer begins to fishtail, slow down and observe whether it stops. If it continues, you should stop at the next rest stop and check how the weight is distributed. It should be distributed evenly from side to side.
Be Aware of Increased Stopping Distance
Remember that the heavier the vehicle, the faster the momentum. For this reason, stopping requires more time, distance, and precision. To keep yourself safe on the road, avoid driving close to other vehicles. Always pay special attention to your surroundings so you can stop in time, if needed.
Stay Safe with the Essentials
Every truck driver should have the essentials for long-distance towing to stay safe on the road or to make emergency repairs, if necessary. We recommend the following emergency items and tools:
- Flares, safety triangles, and flags
- Reflective vests
- First aid kits
- A basic tool kit that includes wrenches, wire cutters, and more
- An electrical kit that includes electrical tape, crimps, and a spare roll of wire
- Tire gauge
- Assorted bungee cords and ratchet straps
- LED flashlight or spotlight
You may also want to pack items such as tarps, WD40, brake cleaner, fix-a-flat, a jack, and some plywood and woodblocks. Additionally, before you’re on the road, you should ensure that your truck meets trailer light specifications to enhance your visibility.
